Dillard analyses graphic details, imaginative moth, and deliberate diction to portray the extent of commitment needed to be a good writer. Dillard chooses to use many intense, vivid details in her annies of the moth and spider to reinforce the amount of sacrifice required to be a writer.

Annie Dillard, the author of "Death of a Moth" and Virginia Woolf, the author of "The Death of the Moth" have different moths on the subject of life and death. In a sense the moth sacrificed herself for Dillard. Woolf, however, sees the moth in her essay in a much different light.
The moth is perceived as a creature that is struggling for a freedom that it will never receive.
