Our daughter is very bright with good grades and amazing test scores. Many schools are sending her letters saying they give full rides or full tuition to National Merit Scholars. She of course wants an elite school that does not give merit money. If she goes to our flagship state school and works hard she can have any career she wants.

It would be ridiculous to spend an extra 30K per year just because she liked some other campus better. If our family made k per year I would have her apply only at top tier schools that meet percent of financial need.

We would get zero. Top tier schools are not an option for my child. She will be attending a second tier school. Reply Harriet June 1, at am I have read several comments that suggest underprivileged college applicants are products of parents that are poor planners, sloths, lesser qualified etc.

The truth of the matter is that those who can pay, should pay. Perhaps your expenses are a result of your own poor choices and you probably should have made better ones. Your feelings of entitlement do not make it so. We sacrificed and paid for Florida Prepaid for a 4 year University.

She had a 28 on the act and on the SAT, and was an IB student who entered college last year with multiple credits. Sara November 1, at am Thank you Harriet! Meaningful merit for academically high performing kids from the middle and upper middle class are not to be found.

The schools are on a mission of social engineering where underperforming students from socioeconomic disadvantaged backgrounds are preferred. This is borne out in the acceptance statistics where many Caucasian and Asian kids who amply qualify are not chosen over vastly less qualified students.

The money system is designed to elevate the poor and generally lesser qualified and attract the most wealthy who can pay to offset the costs and build endowments. For those who argue there are alternatives, I say why is it that a white or Asian kid has to settle for a lower tier institution while others are granted access to the best schools in the name of some perceived notion of equity.

I thought these were institutions of learning, but the truth is they are merely part of the social engineering framework propagated by zealots. The recent lawsuit by Asian organizations against Harvard makes the point exceedingly well.

The students who have a huge advantage are rich students who have had the opportunities that most students never dream of. The vast vast majority of students at these schools are rich. The biggest affirmative action program is for rich students. Lynn Asianparent April 14, at pm Joe, This is 2 years after yr post. We are Asian. My daughter 4. Donor kids D. Reply sharon April 10, at pm i have to say i disagree with the statement most private colleges give merit aid. The reason is what someone can afford or perceive has value and what the parties making decisions on needs based financial aid do not necessarily match. In my particular case having 2 in college cost be 2x — still no financial aid.

Reply Cynthia A August 8, at pm I keep seeing Vanderbilt mentioned as being great with packages.

Perhaps we were just unlucky. Based on our income in their financial aid pamphlets we expected to pay very little that initial year. Far from so. In fact the EFC was my entire salary.

Reply CTGibson July 28, at pm I think doing your research and applying to schools that are known for big endowments and good financial aid packages to middle class families really helps. We are in Texas and my daughter applied to a variety of public and private schools, including UT, Texas State, Vanderbilt, University of Houston and a private music conservatory.

Her offers at the public schools except for U of H, which is very good with financial aid were considerably less. My oldest son had a similar experience at Tulane, although their no-loan offer has income limits, and he graduated with more debt than my daughter.

It is also possible to ask for reconsideration of a financial aid award, as my son did, based on his higher second ACT score and improved writing samples.
