Cotton planters enjoyed hefty profits and sought to expand their thriving enterprises. With this history changing invention, demand for slavery increased more than ever. Southern masters bought more and more slaves to increase their cotton production levels.
With this demand for cotton and slavery, came the Civil War. If your question is about Hitler coming to power, you should not end by giving a summary of what he did once in power. Such an irrelevant ending will fail to win marks. On the other hand, it may be that some of the things Hitler did after coming to power shed valuable light on why he came to power in the first place.
Examiners are not expected to think; you must make your material explicitly relevant. Final Thoughts A good essay, especially one that seems to have been effortlessly composed, has often been revised several times; and the best students are those who are most selfcritical.
Get into the habit of criticising your own first drafts, and never be satisfied with second-best efforts. Also, take account of the feedback you get from teachers. Relevance is vital in a good essay, and so is evidence marshalled in such a way that it produces a convincing argument. But nothing else really matters. The paragraph structure recommended above is just a guide, nothing more, and you can write a fine essay using a very different arrangement of material.
Similarly, though it would be excellent if you wrote in expressive, witty and sparklingly provocative prose, you can still get top marks even if your essay is serious, ponderous and even downright dull. There are an infinite number of ways to write an essay because any form of writing is a means of self-expression.

Why do history courses place such an emphasis on writing? This raises the question, why study history? What is the importance of history to a common being?
History is something that has happened and is factual. By knowing these facts, its students can learn how to progress and advance not making the same mistakes. But a ruffle well hemmed may be important, and not to the hemmer alone. The historian wants to preserve everything in memory. He wants to be useful, to do good. The fire chief, on hearing an alarm, would hastily consult the History of Conflagrations.
But fire chiefs, mayors, and congressmen use history only as an ornament to beautify or conceal their purpose. He took a shipload of historians to Versailles in to make the treaty. And the Treaty of Versailles was rather worse than most treaties, in the judgment of later historians. The lessons of history are as obscure and equivocal as the oracles at Delphi and Dodona.
Its chief lesson is that it has no lessons. Its importance lies only in itself. Its subject is all that man has done in past time. And past time is all time, for the present is only a knife-edge division between past and future. At some point in your research, you should begin thinking about the contention of your essay. Remember, you should be able to express it briefly as if addressing the essay question in a single sentence, or summing up in a debate.
It should sound like the voice of someone well informed about the subject and confident about their answer. Plan an essay structure Once most of your research is complete and you have a strong contention, start jotting down a possible essay structure.
This need not be complicated, a few lines or dot points is ample. Every essay must have an introduction, a body of several paragraphs and a conclusion. Your paragraphs should be well organised and follow a logical sequence. Every paragraph should be clearly signposted in the topic sentence.
Once you have a plan, start drafting your essay. Write a compelling introduction Many consider the introduction to be the most important part of an essay. The introduction is important for several reasons. It is where you begin to signpost the direction your essay will take.
Aim for an introduction that is clear, confident and punchy. Get straight to the point — do not waste time with a rambling or storytelling introduction. Write fully formed paragraphs Many history students fall into the trap of writing short paragraphs, sometimes containing as little as one or two sentences.
All history students should swear a similar oath: to answer the question, the whole question and nothing but the question.
What problem or issue does it want you to address? Remember, writing is a skill and like any skill is sharpened through practice. In medieval history, for instance, ample space is always allotted to feudalism. Eventually you will almost certainly become confused. This is splendid, of course; the researchers deserve all the praise they get, and more. At the same time, the historian is pushed by the academic demand that he publish for promotion, for the attainment of Tenure, that blissful state in which he need never again publish anything.
