Many have Hepatitis B, high blood pressure, liver and kidney failure, diabetes, and other life-threatening health problems. Their life expectancy was only years. I realized that a primary reason was that expectant mothers were malnourished. Since I was very attached to the village and wanted to desperately help the village people, I decided to chose Janaiya as my context. Since I had gotten my topic, my context, and a strong passion for the topic, I thus came up with the research question RQ : What are the causes of maternal malnutrition in Jinaiya, Uttar Pradesh, India and how does it affect life expectancy of its population? Another tip is that to not jump into getting the perfect research question straight away. Confirm your topic and the place you want to study, then write a draft RQ. I tweaked my RQ several times before getting to the final one. However, be careful to not change your RQ a lot of times. You must answer your RQ directly. Do not go off track. Notice that my RQ has the topic, context and what I will be specifically investigating. So, keep your RQ specific and to the point. Deciding which IB subjects to choose: As my topic was on causes and effects of maternal malnutrition, I chose to approach the topic from the lens of Biology and Economics as part of the interdisciplinary approach requirement. I chose Biology because maternal malnutrition, as the name suggests, is related to foetal environment, nutrients, and their effect on the nutrient environment of the foetus. I chose Economics because Janaiya is a village, where people do not have enough money to buy nutrient-rich food. Most people there are farmers. Thus, their living below the poverty line contributes to the expectant being malnourished. Therefore, studying the economics of the village was a great idea. You may not know immediately what subjects are the best to study the topic from. Get an idea of what you might want to choose, but do consult your EE supervisor before confirming them. The subjects must be available on the IB curriculum e. The reason is that you will know more about the subject at HL than SL, and thus be better able to apply them in your EE. Researching the topic: You probably will go to the internet when you start your research. I made the same mistake, not to worry. Artistic Synthesis You engage in an artistic synthesis when you examine an aesthetic interpretation of a non-artistic topic or issue. For example, a historical monument commemorating the Second World War or a poem interpreting climate change. Her paper offers an overview of the long-standing tribal conflicts in the region, the colonial era that suppressed public expression of such tension and the drastic decisions that led to the loss of nearly , lives. Historical insights illuminate her interpretation of the aesthetic choices and symbolism employed in the monument, such as the use of a sand clock to mark the unprecedented speed at which the genocide was unleashed, or the location proposed for the monument as one enters the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. WSEE Documents. Findings are communicated but are largely left without evaluation in the main body of the essay. There is a slight feeling that they are presented gratuitously, as though their significance is obvious. There is some disconnection between the research question and the unexplained path taken by the essay. There is some attempt at evaluation in the conclusion, but it is relatively superficial. The appropriate markband is , as it best fits the descriptors. D: Presentation [4] 3 The formal presentation is generally good. A consistent, if rather vague, form of citation is used. The organization of chapters is acceptable, though greater emphasis on methodology and evaluation would have been good. There is nothing which hinders understanding of the process, findings and conclusion. The appropriate markband is It can also refer looking at a bigger meta concept vs a small subpart of the concept. Essays should contain both primary and secondary data. This is no longer an explicit requirement within the EE rubric so many WSEEs can be completed using only secondary data. Very few can only be answered using primary data as secondary research provides the context.

One big suggestion is to find connections across the groups of IB subjects and be careful about choosing two subject lens from only one one IB Subject group. The nature of interdisciplinary research is explained very clearly on the IB Extended Essay website. Sources are quite well-chosen, but not explained or evaluated. Subject-specific terminology is used quite well in a descriptive context. No concepts or theories are explained. The appropriate markband is again C: Critical thinking [12] 6 No primary data is generated: the essay relies on a survey of secondary sources, though there are anecdotes from personal experience in Vancouver and a visit to Kenya. Some sources seem a little tangential to the research question: evidence is provided of educational attainment in Canada, Gapminder tables on income per person over time, child mortality not malnutrition plotted against poverty, and urban migration. However, no data on infant malnutrition is offered, even though it is readily available with a little research. Findings are communicated but are largely left without evaluation in the main body of the essay. There is a slight feeling that they are presented gratuitously, as though their significance is obvious. There is some disconnection between the research question and the unexplained path taken by the essay. Artistic Synthesis You engage in an artistic synthesis when you examine an aesthetic interpretation of a non-artistic topic or issue. This is very important. You have to link the topic and the chosen place very well; for me, it was maternal malnutrition in Jinaiya. By going there, I found out what agriculture they grow and thus what they eat. This is because, at the end, you have to link the two IB subjects together. Due to the villagers being unable to earn enough money, they are not able to receive a good education, they remain in the poverty trap Economics , and therefore cannot get good food for the expectant mothers, resulting in the expectant mothers being malnourished Biology. Therefore, having a good understanding of the place you have chosen is extremely important. Putting it all together I started on the introduction, then the biology discipline, then the economics discipline, then the conclusion. Starting on the introduction and finishing it before you do anything else is very important. You can even do your abstract after your introduction. The introduction will give your EE shape and a skeleton and you will find it easier to write your EE. A difficulty I faced was that along the way, the biology part of my EE was much more than the economics discipline. The abstract is very important as it is the first thing the examiner will see. The abstract is only words, so make it specific and clear for the examiner to read. For the abstract I had the following: RQ Why knowing the relationship between maternal malnutrition and life expectancy is important Biology and Economics Scope of the EE. I had primary research travelling to Janaiya and secondary research journals, papers, magazines. Conclusion for the EE. The conclusion that you have in your EE can be rephrased in your abstract. The main body of the EE is up to how well you do your research and phrase your sentences. You can add in as many tables and pictures as you want. In fact, I recommend putting in tables to make your information clear. My World Studies EE had a lot of facts and data, so putting them in tables made it much clearer. I also took a picture with each person I interviewed me in the picture , further adding to the credibility of my work. Personal satisfaction Putting one step forward in helping other humans in need through my EE has given me enormous personal satisfaction. The World Studies EE has given me the opportunity to follow my passion, become a more critical yet kinder human being something I truly believe we must achieve in our lifetime , be better-equipped with many important skills that I will carry with me throughout my life. Even more so, this journey has made me realize what a sheltered world you and I live in.

You can even do your abstract after your introduction. Economics, Biology To what extend do oil revenue influence stability of political institutions in Alberta and Saudi Arabia and how can we pursue global economic and political stability by reducing our independence. The four chapters that follow the introduction—global scope, local scope, economic scope and geography scope—are very much the way a WSEE should be configured, though the execution is less impressive. There is nothing which hinders understanding of the process, findings and conclusion. Most people there are farmers. This means that you must choose at least 2 IB subjects E. A World Studies EE must focus on a topic of global significance. The World Studies EE has given me the opportunity to follow my passion, become a more critical yet kinder human being something I truly believe we must achieve in our lifetime , be better-equipped with many important skills that I will carry with me throughout my life.

Its focus seems to be entirely on background factors rather than infant malnutrition itself. While the factors chosen are generally of importance to biology and geography, they are not put together to create an interdisciplinary or distinctive outcome.

The essay is something of a lost opportunity. There is plenty in study and geography on resource allocation, failures of distribution and development that could have allowed a greater demonstration of data and the opportunity to engage in contestable topics and areas of debate.
